CPD Event title: Therapist Attachment Style with Sarah Pennock – Online workshop
Brief Description Of Event: 1. Would you like to increase your awareness of attachment representations that are relationship-specific, provoked in your clinical work? 2. Are you interested in increasing your awareness of your enactments within the therapeutic relationship? 3. Would you like to learn how to consider the triggers for your anxiety, detachment and over-identification in your clinical work?
Therapist attachment security is correlated to stronger therapeutic alliances, greater session depth, more empathetic engagement, and more adaptability to the client’s needs. All therapists come into the clinical relationship with their own history of interpersonal relationships. Increasing awareness of how their own attachment tendencies (beliefs, expectations, responses, defences) might impact others, will facilitate more intentional responses to clients in a way that is healing and moves the therapeutic work forward.
In this workshop, Sarah will present a brief overview of attachment in adults, how the differing styles might present in the consulting room, and what this might provoke in the therapist.
Learning Objectives: By attending this workshop, participants will: 1. Have a much better understanding and awareness of their predominant attachment style, with a particular emphasis in the consulting room. 2. Be able to identify what – in the client presentations – prompts differing responses in their relating, and the impact on the therapeutic alliance. 3. Feel more comfortable navigating several elements within their clinical work: expectations, ruptures, endings, boundaries, and monitoring the alliance, resulting in greater confidence, alongside an evolving acceptance of the ‘good enough’ therapist.
Course Structure: There is an expectation that participants are familiar with the basics of attachment theory (Attachment in Psychotherapy, David J. Wallin, 2015).
